Aims and Objectives

The purpose of our group is to support efforts to address ecological issues in the Hunter or Clyde River Watershed in North Central Queens County, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

What is the problem?
bWaterways have been neglected in the past.
bFish levels are down or, sometimes, non-existent.
bLand owners need financial and practical help with establishing buffer zones.
bHarbours are silting up which affects the tourism and fishing industries.
bInshore fisheries are suffering due to the lack of migratory freshwater fish.

What we aim to achieve
bUsing volunteer effort to renew the ecological balance of the watershed area.
bImprove the value of our waterways to the tourism industry.
bAllow freshwater fish access to headwaters for spawning.
bIncrease the population of native plant species in and adjacent to the waterways.
bIncrease the volume of water in our waterways to reduce siltation.

How we will achieve our aims?
bConducting an assessment of the watershed area.
bRemoving accumulated debris to increase oxygen levels and reduce siltation.
bPlanting native tree species along waterways.
bEstablishing a local native tree nursery.
bAdvising land owners on the options available for their buffer zones.
bInvestigating which fruit-bearing shrubs and trees may be appropriate for planting.
bInstalling fish ladders to enable fish to return to their spawning grounds.
