Aims and Objectives
The purpose of our group is to support efforts to address ecological issues in the Hunter or Clyde River Watershed in North Central Queens County, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
What is the problem?
Waterways have been neglected in the past.
Fish levels are down or, sometimes, non-existent.
Land owners need financial and practical help with establishing buffer zones.
Harbours are silting up which affects the tourism and fishing industries.
Inshore fisheries are suffering due to the lack of migratory freshwater fish.
What we aim to achieve
Using volunteer effort to renew the ecological balance of the watershed area.
Improve the value of our waterways to the tourism industry.
Allow freshwater fish access to headwaters for spawning.
Increase the population of native plant species in and adjacent to the waterways.
Increase the volume of water in our waterways to reduce siltation.
How we will achieve our aims?
Conducting an assessment of the watershed area.
Removing accumulated debris to increase oxygen levels and reduce siltation.
Planting native tree species along waterways.
Establishing a local native tree nursery.
Advising land owners on the options available for their buffer zones.
Investigating which fruit-bearing shrubs and trees may be appropriate for planting.
Installing fish ladders to enable fish to return to their spawning grounds.
We are community members interested in improving the watershed area for future generations by taking an active interest in the health of our environment. We invite you to join our growing group and help us to make the Hunter-Clyde Watershed Area a better place.
