Hunter Clyde Watershed AGM

April 19th 2004

Basement of New Glasgow Christian Church

Garth MacLean called the meeting to order and read the minutes of the last meeting. The minutes were adopted as read.

Garth reported on the 2003/04 year. The Hunter Clyde Watershed Group employed 3 people - 1 Supervisor and 2 Workers. They had a successful season working on the Watershed and in the Nursery. The applications for summer funding have been file with the appropriated Departments.

Janet Lester gave the financial report, Janet moved the report and Bill Hamon seconded.

Cindy Crane from the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment presented a slide show on Surface Water Quality and the Algae buildup in the water ways. A lot of the time excess Algae is blamed on the lack of water flow. The Department has done various testing on water flow in rivers and streams. The water areas are tested before a structure (for example a bridge) as well as after the structure. The areas are compared for flow. In most cases the flow of water is similar. The majority of Algae buildup is caused from Nitrate runoff from the land. This is an issue with all watershed groups across PEI. Community Stewardship Programs can assist in reducing some of the Nitrates.

Garth resigned as president of the Watershed Group. There were no nominations from the floor therefore at this time it was agreed to reschedule the AGM in the fall. Meanwhile it will be status quo with the summer employment. Janet agreed to continue as Treasurer and she will assist with the payment of summer staff. Both Shelley (Provincial Government) and Ray (Federal Government) with continue to work with the group so it can move forward.

Meeting was adjourned and will be rescheduled in the fall of 2004.
